Things to Know About E-Cigarettes
In the past decade, there has been a boom in “e-cigarettes” or “vape pens.” Vaping is a popular alternative to smoking cigarettes because e-cigarettes don’t contain tobacco and don’t produce smoke.
Spending on e-cigarette products has doubled every year since 2010 and is now estimated at $2 billion annually. Most people who vape are former smokers looking for a way to kick their habit. Some ex-smokers claim e-cigarettes helped them stop smoking, but there’s no evidence that e-cigarettes help people quit more than methods like nicotine patches or gum. If you’re trying to quit smoking or just want an alternative to traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes could be for you. But before you pick up a pack of e-cigarettes, here’s what you need to know:
They’re not regulated the same as other tobacco products: E-cigarettes and other similar products aren’t currently regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA has proposed rules that would bring them under the agency’s purview, but those rules have yet to be finalized. Until then, they’re sold as unregulated tobacco products.
How they work: E-cigarettes are handheld electronic devices that heat a liquid nicotine solution, creating vapor that users inhale. This is why users refer to “vaping” rather than smoking. They look like regular cigarettes and come in various sizes, colors and designs. E-cigarettes typically use cartridges filled with nicotine liquid, which may or may not contain flavoring agents like fruit, mint or clove. Some e-cigarette companies also sell prefilled cartridges called “e-liquid.” For more information check HEXA Pods for more information.
E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that are designed to release nicotine, flavour and other chemicals as an alternative to burning tobacco. When you draw on the device, it heats up a liquid that contains nicotine, producing a vapour that can be inhaled.
E-cigarettes are used by some people who want to quit smoking tobacco products. They are sometimes called “vape pens” or “e-hookahs.”
Use of e-cigarettes has grown quickly in the U.S. in recent years. In 2013, about 3 percent of American adults said they had tried e-cigarettes, according to a survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). By 2014, that figure had grown to 10 percent.
But most people who use e-cigarettes are current or former smokers rather than people who’ve never smoked before, studies show.
According to the CDC survey, e-cigarette use is more common among men than women and more common among those with lower incomes than higher incomes. The vast majority of users were white or black; only 1 percent were Hispanic or Latino.
The health risks of e-cigarettes aren’t fully understood, but some research suggests they’re not completely safe.
